OK–so there are a lot of years of back-to-school shopping before you get to this wonderful day! This is my fourth child, Lane, on his graduation day. Four down–two to go. School shopping has been going on in my family for 23 years and I figure another six to go. Hopefully in all those years, I’ve learned a few things that might help someone else!
Back-to-school time brings excitement for some–anxiety for others. Either way, there are some things that can be done in preparation, including school shopping, to increase the anticipation and fun. Maybe you have never considered that getting organized for the shopping would be helpful. Let me share a few things that might help!!
This is also the time to take a look at the family budget and consciously choose what funds are available. You will find that clothing needs for older children tend to be more expensive and extensive! Also decide about using cash vs. credit and don’t forget the school supplies, backpacks, lunch money, school fees, etc., that will also be needed. Make sure your student is aware of what their individual budget is and is given some wiggle room within the budget to make some decisions. Great practice! Carrying a small notebook to record purchases as you go will help you stay out of the red!
TACKLE the job. Plan the actual shopping trip by considering:
Once you have made the purchases, take advantage of this teaching moment to teach your children how to store and care for their clothing. If they are attending school, they will have some capability for learning to hang or fold clothing and how to determine when it needs laundering. Remember that “M” is for Mother–not Maid!

This is a great resource for anyone who is ready to let go of some still-usable items and would like to find the perfect recipient.
QUOTE FROM THEIR SITE:
Do you have too much stuff and want to donate items or materials from your business or home?
We link each donation with the wish-lists of your nearby charities that can provide pick-ups or will accept drop-offs. And donors get tax-deductible receipts.
We serve the US, Canada and beyond!
Together we’re all keeping useful goods from ending up in over-flowing garbage dumps.
It’s great for clearing your space, supplying nonprofit needs and for the environment! Everybody wins!
If you’re ready to share your abundance, here is the place to go!
What would you do with it? The average American spends 55 minutes a day looking for “things” they can’t immediately put their hands on. That is nearly 7 hours a week–over 350 hours a year!
Taking the time to organize your spaces, your systems, your paper and your calendar will pay off exponentially. Give yourself that gift. Commit. Decide to decide. Purposely move forward with the intention of bringing simplicity into your life on many levels!
What would you do with your extra hour a day? I would love to know! And, I would love to help.
Peter is a gifted organizer! With a little coaching expertise and direction, you can do this same thing in your home!

Are you looking for more space for storage in your home? Don’t forget to consider every corner, every door, every wall!
This odd behind-the-door corner provides storage for 4 different utility-type items without being in the way of anything or being unsightly! From the left:
(1) Using over-the-door hooks, aprons are in easy reach!
(2) Battery testing and storage unit keeps all the battery sizes organized and provides easy access for testing.
(3) Hanging mail pouch unit provides a spot for mail and “in-process” papers for each family member–including those who no longer live at home but seem to keep getting occasional mail!
(4) The iron and ironing board–easy to grab and easy to put away.
This corner is inside the entryway/laundry/mud room. It uses a space that otherwise would be basically wasted!
Take a look around to see if there isn’t a corner, door or some vertical space in your home or office that would give just that little nook you need!
Send me your thoughts and photos–I’d love to see what you come up with and post it to share with others!

There is typically something in every space of our lives that we DO like. Take a look around and notice what you love about a space. Do you like the paint color? Is the furniture layout nice? Do you like the music you listen to when you are in the room?
Before you can begin to organize anything, it is important to recognize what IS working. Then we can start to take a look at what IS NOT working. Before we can map out the project, we have to know where we are beginning!
You have just completed the first step in my A.C.T. formula, which is to ASSESS the current situation. CONGRATULATIONS! Knowing where you are is a great step towards moving forward.
Check back for the next step–I will make it clear and easy for you to begin!
Are you struggling with the clutter that seems to accumulate in your home or office? Feeling a little overwhelmed with where to begin and how to start to make a difference?
Can I suggest that ridding yourself of one item per day for a year will change your life! Imagine 365 items gone! Would it make a difference? Do you believe that you can let one thing a day go? I KNOW you can!
Start with easy things. Things that might even be just trash! Choose a time each day to deal with this project … maybe it is right after you finish dressing in the morning, or if you are work, during your morning break. It should take less than one minute to scan the area, select and item and either toss it, add it to a “donate” box you have labeled. The donation box can be distributed on a day when you have 10 minutes to drop it off!
Just one item a day! Oh–by the way. If you bring something new into your space, the rules for this game require you eliminate the daily “one,” AS WELL AS one item for each new item you bring in. So, be careful what you allow into your space! Remember that everyTHING we bring into our lives–stuff, commitments, relationships, food–requires our energy and time in one form or another.
So–what is the item you will eliminate TODAY! I’d love to know what you want to let go!!
Oh–and by the way. The rules of the game DO allow for you to get excited and eliminate more than one thing a day. In fact … there are no limits! Go for it!
Did you know that getting organized can decrease the amount of time you need to spend on housework by 40% (according to the National Organization of Professional Organizers). Don’t know about you, but it seems to me it would be worth a few hours of focused work on any space that is driving you crazy to save that much time–again and again!
Would you like simple, step by step help for organizing any project? It’s all here! Read the Salt Lake Tribune article; then give this a try on your own. If you have questions or would like some hands-on help, give me a call at 801-376-3367 or email laura@harmonywithin.com
